Ghana faces Sudan test in AFCON Qualifier today
Accra, Ghana - October 10, 2024 - The Black Stars of Ghana face a must-win encounter against Sudan in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday, October 10, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana's campaign has stumbled with a loss to Angola and a draw against Niger, leaving them outside the qualification places.
Otto Addo's side seeks to rebound against a formidable Sudanese team led by familiar face James Kwasi Appiah, Ghana's former coach and player. Appiah has impressed with six competitive games, securing four wins, one draw, and one loss since taking charge of Sudan.
Ghana's recent form raises concerns, with only two wins in nine games this year. In contrast, Sudan boasts three wins from four games in 2024, with their sole defeat coming against Angola.
At the pre-match press conference, Addo acknowledged the pressure but expressed confidence in his team's ability to win.
"I think there is no assurance for anything…but there is a high probability that we will win."
"It comes with preparations, with consciousness…for me, even when I was playing to get is always on the other side of fear. I fear God but that is it, for me I am fearless.
"If our players will have that attitude and show passion and they will be fearless, I am sure that the probability is very high that we will win,'' he added.
Sudan's assistant coach, Ignatius Osei Fosu, downplayed Appiah's connection to Ghana, stating, “Kwasi Appiah has nothing to prove. His coaching credentials are there for all to see. For me, nobody even knows I’m the assistant coach of Sudan.
“We just want to qualify and that’s the aim. It’s just unfortunate we have to face Ghana. I wish this match didn’t happen,” he added..
The match kicks off at 4 pm, with Ghanaians eagerly anticipating a Black Stars victory to revive their AFCON hopes.
