UTAG embarks on indefinite strike over galamsey

Accra, Ghana - October 10, 2024 - The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has taken a bold stance against illegal mining, declaring an indefinite strike across all 15 branches, effective today, October 10, 2024.

This decision comes despite Organised Labour's suspension of its planned strike following the government's pledge to address the issue.

In a referendum held yesterday, October 9, UTAG members overwhelmingly supported the motion to strike, with 77.95% voting in favor, 21.98% against, and 0.07% abstaining.

The National Executive Council of UTAG invoked Article XIX, Clause 5 of the UTAG Constitution, mandating the strike until the government announces a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting activities in protected areas.

UTAG's strike aims to pressure the government to take decisive action against galamsey, which has severely impacted Ghana's water bodies and forests.

Prof. Ransford Gyampo, President of UG-UTAG, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, reaffirming the association's commitment to taking a strong stand.

“Following the referendum, the NEC convened an emergency meeting, invoking Article XIX, Clause 5 of the UTAG Constitution. In line with this constitutional mandate, NEC has unanimously declared an immediate INDEFINITE STRIKE from the 10th of October 2024 across all 15 UTAG branches. All members are directed to comply with this decision until the government formally announces a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting activities in protected areas, including forest reserves, farmlands, and water.”
