Galamsey Crackdown: 20 Suspects, Including 2 Chinese Nationals, arrested in Eastern Region
New Abirem, Eastern Region - October 14, 2024 - A major crackdown on illegal mining has led to the arrest of 20 suspects, including two Chinese nationals, by the Akyem Kotoku Environmental Task Force in New Abirem, Eastern Region.
The suspects were caught red-handed engaging in galamsey activities near the Roman Missionary House in the Birim North District on Sunday, October 13.
The task force seized three excavators, various mining equipment, and two pumping machines during the operation. All 20 suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting court arraignment.
Tensions had been running high in the area after local youth confronted the District Chief Executive (DCE) and police on Saturday, resisting the transportation of excavators into the community. Ironically, the same machines were later found behind the Roman Missionary House, being used for illegal mining.
The Birem North DCE, Hon. Raymond Nana Damptey, has faced multiple accusations of involvement in illegal mining from local youth and chiefs, which he has consistently denied. However, a viral video captured during the task force's operation appears to show the DCE and Nana Aduasenehene attempting to use their influence to counter the youth's resistance.
Eric Gyataba, head of the task force, confirmed the arrests and expressed frustration over interference by local authorities in their efforts to combat illegal mining. This development highlights the ongoing challenges in the fight against galamsey in Ghana.
