First presidential debate set for October 22 - IEA
Accra, Ghana - September 13, 2024 - The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced the schedule for its Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates and Evening Encounters, with the first Presidential debate set for October 22.
The IEA will host five Evening Encounters, two Presidential debates, and one Vice-Presidential debate in Accra and Kumasi from September 18 to November 19.
The IEA emphasized the significance of these debates in Ghana's democratic process in a press release, stating they have influenced election outcomes since their inception in 2000.
The debates provide a platform for exchanging ideas and policies, informing voters' decisions, and promoting accountability among candidates.
The IEA believes these events are crucial for Ghana's democracy, fostering informed decision-making and ensuring leaders are answerable to the public. The debates are expected to play a pivotal role in this year's elections.
“These debates have remarkably advanced the democratic discourse by providing a platform where candidates can directly convey their policies and visions to the electorate. This transparent exchange of ideas empowers voters to make well-informed decisions rooted in the candidates’ positions on critical matters,” portions of its statement read.
“Moreover, Presidential debates and Evening Encounters instill a sense of accountability in candidates, compelling them to elucidate their positions and rationalize their policies, consequently promoting transparency and ensuring that leaders are answerable to the populace,” the statement read.
