Electoral Commission’s voter exhibition struggles with low participation

Voter exhibition officers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis are calling for increased public awareness of the Electoral Commission’s ongoing voter register exhibition, citing low turnout during the first two days.

Polling stations at Takoradi Presbyterian Church and Takoradi Technical University, each with over 1,000 registered voters, reported fewer than 50 visitors.

Similar low turnouts were observed in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions on the first day of the exercise.

The Electoral Commission’s voter register exhibition, running from August 20 to 27, 2024, allows registered voters to request inclusions, object to entries, and remove the names of deceased individuals, among other actions.

One officer noted, “Yesterday [Tuesday, August 20], we recorded a number of 27 for three polling stations. Today [Wednesday, August 21], as of 9:00 am, we’ve recorded just two. I think education should be sent out more, so people can come and register.”

“But I think that the reason why people are not coming in is because of the shortcode that has been given to check your name online. We are also pleading with them that they should come and register.”
