Democracy Hub convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor granted GH¢20k bail
Accra, Ghana - October 16, 2024 - Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of the Democracy Hub protest, has finally been granted bail after multiple attempts. The Accra High Court set the bail at GH¢20,000 with two sureties, requiring him to report to the police twice a week.
This comes after his arrest on September 23, 2024, along with 52 others, for allegedly causing public disturbances during the protest.
Barker-Vormawor faces charges of stealing, unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public officer, and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace. Initially, the Accra Circuit Court and the High Court denied him bail, citing concerns of further investigation and public unrest.
However, after his lawyers reapplied for bail, the High Court reconsidered, warning that bail would be granted if the prosecution failed to commence the trial. This decision marks a significant development in Barker-Vormawor's case, who was already on bail for treason felony charges at the time of the alleged offenses.
