Court adjourns bail hearing for Democracy Hub protesters until October 7
Accra, Ghana - A group of protesters arrested for demonstrating against illegal mining and economic hardship in Accra will have to wait a little longer to know their fate.
An Accra High Court has adjourned the hearing of their bail application until October 7, 2024.
The protesters' lawyers had requested an expedited hearing, but the Attorney General's department asked for more time to review and respond to the bail application.
The court granted this request, giving the AG's department until today to file its response.
In its response, the AG's department argued that the bail application was incomplete, lacking essential documents such as the charge sheet and Circuit Court proceedings.
However, the protesters' counsel countered that the AG's department already possessed the charge sheet since they filed the charges.
The court ultimately sided with the State's argument, denying the protesters' request for a brief adjournment to gather the necessary documents.
This decision means the protesters will remain in police and prison custody until the adjourned date, just one day before their remand order expires.
Protesters' Plight
- 53 protesters are currently in custody
- Accused of committing several offenses during the demonstration
- Bail application hearing adjourned until October 7
- Remand order set to expire on October 8
