Bawumia promises to increase daily feeding 'allawa' for prisoners from ₵1.80 to GH₵6
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate, has pledged to prioritise the expansion and enhancement of the country's jail facilities if elected.
During his campaign trip for Akim Oda in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia spoke with supporters about his idea for transforming the country's jails into true rehabilitation centers.
Addressing the welfare of inmates, Dr. Bawumia criticized the present daily stipend of GHS1.80 as insufficient.
He promised to boost this amount to GHS6 next year if elected President, in order to improve detainees' living circumstances.
"My government will improve prison infrastructure to enhance the rehabilitation of prisoners," he revealed,"he stated.
Dr. Bawumia had already supported the rewiring of the Ashanti Regional Central Prisons in response to a direct petition from the service, as well as the development of portable water systems in numerous prison sites, which serve both convicts and officials.
In acknowledgment of his contributions, the Prisons Service's Ashanti Regional Directorate presented Dr. Bawumia with a plaque, expressing gratitude for his ongoing assistance.
