I will not be on honeymoon but go straight to work - Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the governing New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate, has promised to hit the ground running if elected in the next general elections, with a focus on job creation and economic development.

According to him, his government will forego a honeymoon phase and begin work immediately after assuming office.

He made these remarks during a media event on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

When asked what he’d do in the first 100 days in office, he replied, “I will definitely not be on a honeymoon. My government will go straight to work, and for me, my focus is on jobs.”

He also detailed a number of immediate actions, such as creating a budget as soon as possible to implement crucial economic goals.

His primary priorities are the implementation of a tax amnesty and a flat tax regime, both of which he hopes to have ready by the time the first budget is read in March.

He also intends to advocate for legislation to support the "Buy Ghana First" agenda. This policy is intended to prioritise local firms and products while promoting Ghanaian-made products.

Another key pledge from Dr. Bawumia is the elimination of the E-levy, which he feels would help facilitate the smooth implementation of his digitalisation program.

“The E-levy will be abolished because we have to focus on digitalization of our economy and so we need to take out the E-levy to make the facilitation of digitalization smooth. So these are some of the things I believe we can do very quickly in the first 100 days when we are voted into office,” he pledged.

Dr Bawumia also highlighted plans to review the tariff structure for businesses to create a more favourable environment for economic growth.

“Those things that will get businesses moving in order to create jobs will be looked at to show that we are serious about local businesses and serious about job creation,” he assured.
