Akufo-Addo challenges Mahama to debate Bawumia
Tamale, Ghana - October 16, 2024 - President Nana Akufo-Addo has challenged former President John Mahama to engage in a public debate with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia before the December elections.
This invitation comes after repeated calls from Dr. Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Mahama to participate in a debate, which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has consistently rejected.
Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of open dialogue in a democratic society during a meeting with chiefs in Tamale on October 16. He stressed that the people of Ghana deserve to see their leaders discuss and defend their policies transparently.
"We need somebody who's reliable, whose work can be trusted, who is consistent, and who is clear-minded," Akufo-Addo stated. "That is why some of us, in fact, the majority of us in Ghana, are saying we want him and Bawumia to debate the issues in our country"
Akufo-Addo questioned Mahama's reluctance to engage in the debate, highlighting the need for clarity on crucial issues such as the free senior high school policy.
"Mister Mahama, which is which? What should the Ghanaian people take from you as your position on the free senior high school? Is it safe with you? Are you gonna continue it or you're going to review it? Are you gonna cancel it?"
The President asserted that leaders must provide straightforward answers to critical questions, emphasizing that transparency and accountability are essential in leadership.
"Nobody should be allowed to be president who cannot answer these questions straightforward. Yes or no?"
