98% of NPP National Council Members Approve January 2026 Primaries - Miracles Aboagye
Accra, Ghana - 22 June, 2025 - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed that its National Council has overwhelmingly voted in favour of holding presidential primaries on January 31, 2026. The decision, which was backed by 98% of the council members, has been defended by the party's leadership as a consensus-driven outcome.
According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, the level of support for the decision demonstrates the party's commitment to unity and internal democracy.
He criticised those who express dissenting views in the public domain after participating in internal deliberations, describing it as "anti-party" behaviour.
“The National Council voted, and there was 98% in support of the decision. So when you finish, and you have a dissenting view, it is completely anti-party to bring that dissenting view into the public space,'' he stated on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, June 21.
Mr. Aboagye argued that while internal discussions are essential for decision-making, publicly airing minority views can sow confusion and undermine party unity. He stressed that once a final decision is made, party members should rally behind it, rather than continuing to project their individual opinions.
“You may have that dissenting view, but it was expressed and discussed at the National Council meeting before a final decision was taken,” he stressed.
“Now, immediately you move that dissenting view into the media space, all you are doing is planting discord in the minds of people, knowing very well that this is a minority view.”
The announcement of the primary date has not been without controversy, with some party members expressing criticism. However, the party's General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, has insisted that the decision was reached through due process, with the date being proposed by the party's constitution review committee and approved by the National Council.
The NPP's leadership has made it clear that the January 31, 2026, date will not be subject to a vote at the delegates' conference, citing the National Council's constitutional mandate to finalise such decisions
