Atwima Mponua, Ashanti Region, Ghana - 24 Feb, 2025 - The country's forest reserves are reeling from the devastating impact of illegal mining activities, with the destruction estimated to be equivalent to approximately 7,500 football pitches according to Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah.
This staggering figure, according to him represents the combined destruction of over 44 forest reserves, spanning about 30 hectares.
The Minister disclosed this during a tour of the Offin Shelter Belt at Anwiafutu in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti region, witnessing firsthand the havoc wrought by illegal mining.
He emphasized that the government is committed to securing the affected areas and reclaiming the destroyed lands.
Buah urged the police to take decisive action against perpetrators, stating that ''this goes to the police officers, this government is strongly behind you to do your job and make sure that you bring perpetrators who are killing us to book without fear nor favor.''
The fight against galamsey, as illegal mining is locally known, is a long-term commitment. Buah cautioned that it won't be a short-lived effort, and the government is dedicated to ensuring that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.
