500 Jobs at Risk as Two Cashew Factories in Ghana Face Shutdown

Accra, Ghana - 27 May, 2025 - Ghana's cashew processing sector is staring at a potential crisis, with two local factories on the brink of shutdown within the next two months, putting around 500 jobs at risk, according to the Association of Cashew Processors Ghana (ACPG).
The immediate past President of the association, Ed-Malvin Nii Ayi Bonte sounded the alarm, citing inadequate financial investment as the main culprit behind the looming closures. According to him, the sector, which currently employs approximately 2,000 workers, requires urgent government support in the form of low-interest loans to stay afloat.
Bonte warned that factory closures would not only lead to significant job losses but also incur additional costs associated with retraining workers when operations resume.
“Once we stop processing midway, it means all the workers will have to be laid off and then brought back when the season resumes next year. This requires retraining, which costs money,” he said. “Those shutting down for two to three months risk losing almost all their workers,'' Bonte revealed at the the Association’s sixth annual general meeting.
