Your Comments Undermine the Fight Against Corruption - OSP Hits Back at Gyampo Over Ofori-Atta Investigation Claims
Accra, Ghana - 22 June, 2025 - Ghana's Office of the Special Prosecutor has hit back at criticism from Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, over its investigation into former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta.
The OSP has described Professor Gyampo's comments as "unfounded" and potentially damaging to the country's anti-corruption efforts.
In a public notice released on Sunday, June 22, 2025, the OSP defended its investigation into Mr. Ofori-Atta, saying it was based on allegations of corruption and abuse of office. The investigation centres on a multi-year contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), a company that has come under scrutiny for its dealings with the government.
“The OSP wishes to place on record that its actions involving the former Finance Minister are based on stated allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences, particularly abuse of office for profit, including the multi-year contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML),” portions of the notice read.
Professor Gyampo had expressed concerns that the OSP's investigation might be driven by personal animosity rather than patriotism while speaking on TV3 on June 21.
“I hope the OSP is not motivated by vendetta but out of patriotism,” Prof. Gyampo said.
However, the OSP rejected this suggestion, pointing out that Professor Gyampo had himself contacted the office during a recent search of SML's premises, which was conducted with the support of National Security operatives.
The OSP warned public officials against interfering with ongoing investigations, whether through direct intervention or public commentary. It emphasized that such actions could undermine the fight against corruption and damage the reputation of Ghana's anti-corruption institutions.
“Incidentally, the said CEO called and sent messages to the Office in respect of SML while officers of the OSP and National Security were still conducting a legal search of SML’s premises,” the notice added.
While the OSP welcomed constructive criticism, it made it clear that it would not tolerate attempts to compromise its investigations or undermine its mandate. The office remains committed to pursuing its cases, including the investigation into Mr. Ofori-Atta, with integrity and impartiality.
“It cautions public officials to refrain from interfering—whether directly or through unfounded public statements—with ongoing investigations. Such actions have the potential to undermine the fight against corruption,” it concluded.
