Yaw Obimpeh Wins Council of State Seat in Ashanti Region

Kumasi, Ghana - 17 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Ashanti Region has a new representative on the Council of State, after Yaw Owusu Obimpeh emerged victorious in a re-run election.

The former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress secured 49 votes, beating his closest rival Nkansah Boadu Nana Ayeboafo by 14 votes.

The election, which took place on Monday, February 17, 2025, saw Obimpeh lead the race with a significant margin. Out of the expected 86 votes, a total of 85 valid votes were cast, with no rejected ballots.

Obimpeh's victory marks a strong endorsement by the electorate in the Ashanti Region, and comes after the initial election was suspended last week due to chaos at the voting center. The re-run election was held under tight security, with police stationed at the Prempeh Assembly hall to prevent any violent clashes.

As a member of the Council of State, Obimpeh will play a crucial role in advising the President on national and regional matters. His election is seen as a pivotal moment for the region's governance.
