We Got It Wrong - Bawumia Apologizes to NPP Members for Election Defeat

Accra, Ghana - 20 May, 2025 - Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with the aftermath of its disappointing performance in the recent general elections. Former Vice President and presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken responsibility for the party's setback, offering a public apology to members for the losses incurred.
In a candid admission, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that the party's campaign had shortcomings, which ultimately affected the outcome. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the party's future prospects, citing the lessons learned from the experience.
“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said during an address in London.
Despite the setback, Dr Bawumia expressed optimism about the future, stating:
“I believe that, by the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward.”
The NPP's electoral performance was marked by significant losses, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a substantial majority in Parliament and its presidential candidate, John Mahama, winning the presidency with a considerable margin.
An internal investigation into the party's defeat, led by Professor Mike Oquaye, has submitted its findings to the party leadership. However, the contents of the report remain confidential, sparking curiosity among party members and the public alike.
