‘We Are Not criminals’ - Nigeria Speaks Out Against Anti-Nigerian Protest in Ghana
The Nigerian government has strongly condemned a recent protest in Ghana where demonstrators called for the expulsion of Nigerians from the country, citing alleged misconduct. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), described the protest as an "unfair generalization" and "blanket outrage" against Nigerians living in Ghana.
"Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves, while those who misbehave should face necessary sanctions," Dabiri-Erewa emphasized. She appealed for calm on all sides, cautioning Nigerians in Ghana against responding with provocation or violence. Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the close relationship between Ghana and Nigeria, saying they are "like Siamese twins" and must maintain peaceful coexistence within the ECOWAS framework.
The Nigerian government has taken swift action to address the situation. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, has engaged with Ghanaian authorities to de-escalate tensions. Dabiri-Erewa commended the efforts of both the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissioners in resolving the issue.
The Nigerian Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs also condemned the protest, describing it as "deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood." Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the need to promote peace, unity, and regional integration within ECOWAS. He praised Dabiri-Erewa and Ojukwu for their diplomatic handling of the situation.
Both Nigerian authorities assured citizens that the rights and safety of Nigerians in Ghana remain a priority. They urged citizens to refrain from inciteful comments that could worsen tensions and to remain law-abiding.
