VRA staff suspend industrial action over proposed mergers
Accra, Ghana - October 31, 2024 - Volta River Authority (VRA) staff groups have temporarily suspended some protests, awaiting the complete withdrawal of contentious energy sector bills.
The Ministry of Energy's request to Parliament to halt consideration of the proposed legislation sparked this decision. Staff groups oppose the merger of VRA with Bui Power Authority, Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing concerns about:
- Job security
- Lack of communication from the Ministry
- Potential privatization
In a October 29 statement, VRA Staff Groups notified the Minister of Energy about their partial suspension of actions, reiterating their commitment to essential services.
Staff Demands:
1. Total withdrawal of energy sector bills
2. Transparent communication from the Ministry
3. Peaceful industrial atmosphere at VRA and NEDCo
Management and staff leadership previously urged the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, Herbert Krapa, to facilitate the bills' withdrawal.
