UK Takes Historic Step: Recognizes Palestine as Sovereign State
Prime Minister Keir Starmer

The United Kingdom has taken a historic step in its foreign policy by formally recognizing Palestine as an independent and sovereign state. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday, September 21, 2025, marks a significant shift in the UK's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The UK will establish full diplomatic relations with Palestine at the ambassador level, enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation. Existing agreements and treaties between the UK and Palestine will be reviewed to strengthen economic and security cooperation. The recognition underscores the UK's commitment to a two-state solution, with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that Hamas will have no role in the future governance of Palestine, stressing the need for a reformed Palestinian Authority.

Sir Keir insisted the decision "is not a reward for Hamas" because it means Hamas can have "no future, no role in government, no role in security".

"Our call for a genuine two-state solution is the exact opposite of [Hamas's] hateful vision," he said.

The move is a "pledge to the Palestinian and Israeli people that there can be a better future", he continued, adding the "starvation and devastation [in Gaza] are utterly intolerable" and the "death and destruction horrifies all of us".

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the decision, which Sir Keir had confirmed in a letter to the leader, saying it would help pave the way for the "state of Palestine to live side by side with the state of Israel in security, peace and good neighbourliness".

Over 140 countries have already recognized Palestine as a state, with Canada and Australia joining the UK in this latest wave of recognitions. The decision has been met with criticism from the United States and Israel, which argue that recognition emboldens extremists and rewards Hamas. The recognition comes ahead of the UN General Assembly, where other nations, including France, are expected to announce similar recognitions.

The UK's recognition aims to create momentum towards meaningful peace negotiations and strengthen moderate Palestinian leadership. The decision paves the way for enhanced economic cooperation and development frameworks between the UK and Palestine. This move places additional pressure on other Western nations to reconsider their positions on Palestinian statehood.
