Thousands of Ghanaian Students Vanish from Canadian Universities

A disturbing trend has emerged in Canada, where thousands of international students, including many from Ghana, have gone missing from their universities.
A report by the Canadian immigration department reveals that 2,712 Ghanaian students who were supposed to be enrolled in Canadian universities are unaccounted for.
The report, released in January 2025, found that over 50,000 international students across Canada were absent from their schools, with India, China, Nigeria, and Ghana having the highest numbers of missing students. Canadian universities are required to report twice a year on the attendance of international students, helping the government track whether students are complying with the terms of their study permits.
While many Ghanaian students have disappeared, others are still attending classes. The report confirmed that 5,881 Ghanaian students, or about 67% of those enrolled, are actively pursuing their studies. The situation has raised concerns that some individuals may be exploiting student visas to enter Canada for purposes other than education.
Experts are now proposing that international students pay their tuition fees in full before arriving in Canada, in an effort to prevent people from using study permits as a means to migrate to the country without intending to study.
