The La War god, Afrimi, emerged in grand style, as the Abese Mantse, Nii Kwade Okropong I, hosted a majestic Yam Feast in his honor. The festivities held a week ago were marked by the commissioning of new traditional military officers within the Abese Divisional Area, a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the La people.

The Abese people, revered as custodians of Afrimi, have a storied past as elite warriors who formed the vanguard of the La Army.The Shippi, Commander of the Army, hails from this division and is often bestowed with the title Male Osokrono. Their bravery and strategic prowess have been celebrated throughout history, and their contributions to the Ga-Dangme victory at the Battle of Katamanso in 1826 remain a shining example of their valor.

A Glimpse into History: Male's Decisive Actions

According to C.C. Reindorf's History of the Gold Coast and Asante, Male, the wise and decisive commander from La Abese, played a pivotal role in the Battle of Katamanso. His clever tactics and knowledge of the terrain allowed the Ga-Dangme army to outmaneuver their opponents and secure a crucial victory. As Reindorf recounts, Male's decision to lead the army through a hidden pathway, rather than the main road, proved to be a masterstroke, saving the army from certain defeat.
