Tema, Takoradi Ports to Operate 24-hours to Boost Economy - Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 12 June, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to transform Ghana's economy through a bold 24-hour economy initiative, starting with the declaration of Tema and Takoradi ports as round-the-clock operational ports.

This move aims to boost productivity, efficiency, and national growth by enabling continuous port operations, reducing delays, and attracting increased investment.

Speaking at the 2025 Horticulture Expo, President Mahama emphasized that the initiative goes beyond extending work hours, requiring comprehensive infrastructure development to support uninterrupted economic activity. This includes improving energy supply, enhancing security, strengthening transport networks, and developing digital platforms.

The President described the 24-hour economy policy as "a strategy of hope rooted in efficiency and skill," with the potential to reposition Ghana as a leading trade hub in West Africa. The initiative is a flagship program under the RESET Agenda, aimed at reengineering key sectors for sustainable national development.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Trade and Agriculture Business and Industry, together with the Ministry of Transport, are working in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers’ Council, and other key stakeholders to soon declare the Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour operational ports,” he stated.

According to President Mahama, the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture Business and Industry, Transport, and other key stakeholders are working together to implement the policy. The declaration of 24-hour operational ports is expected to significantly enhance Ghana's trade and logistics capacity, driving economic growth and development.

“It will involve building the necessary infrastructure, improving energy supply, enhancing security, strengthening transport networks, and developing digital platforms to enable continuous agricultural and industrial activities,” Mahama added.
