Tema Central Recount Descends into Chaos as NDC's Ebi Bright and Dafeamekpor Walks Out
A dramatic standoff unfolded at the Electoral Commission's Greater Accra Regional office on Saturday, as the re-collation exercise for the Tema Central parliamentary seat descended into chaos.
At the heart of the dispute lies a contentious re-collation process, ordered by the High Court to address concerns over initial results.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ebi Bright, and her legal representative, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, stormed out of the collation room in protest. They accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of defying the court's order to restart the re-collation process from scratch. Instead, the EC opted to resume from where the previous process left off, under the direction of Tema Metropolitan Director Manasseh Ofosuhene Asante.
Dafeamekpor argued that this approach compromised the integrity of the re-collation and favored the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC demanded that the process be overseen by the designated Returning Officer for Tema Central, rather than Ofosuhene Asante, whom they accused of bias and corruption.
The walkout has exacerbated tensions and mistrust surrounding the Tema Central re-collation exercise. The NDC has vowed not to participate unless the EC adheres to the court's directive and ensures a fair and lawful process. The standoff has raised concerns about the credibility of Ghana's electoral process and the ability of the EC to manage disputes effectively.
