Targeted Attack Claims Life of Bawku SHS Student, School Temporarily Closed
Bawku, Ghana – 27 July, 2025 – A third-year student of Bawku Senior High School, Hakim Kundima, 18, was fatally shot on the school's campus in a targeted attack on Saturday, July 26, 2025. The incident led to the temporary closure of the school due to safety concerns for students and staff.
According to eyewitnesses, unknown gunmen scaled the school's perimeter fence around 8:30 p.m. and stormed the dormitory where Hakim resided. They dragged him outside and shot him before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made yet, and investigations are ongoing.
The victim's elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally delivered Hakim's body to the family. Tahiru suspects the killing might be linked to the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in the Bawku area, which has experienced recurring violence in recent years.
Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, announced the school's temporary closure on Sunday, July 27, emphasizing the need to prioritize students' and staff members' safety. This decision comes after a similar incident at Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on the same evening, raising concerns about security in senior high schools in the region.
Meanwhile ,the Mahama administration has deployed the army to Bawku to enforce curfews and maintain law and order, amid escalating violence in the area.
