SWAG calls for accountability amid AFCON fiasco
Accra, Ghana - Nov 20, 2024 - The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has expressed worry over Ghana's shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), breaking a 20-year streak.
This disappointing outcome exposes deeper issues within Ghanaian football, despite substantial government investments and fervent public support.
The Black Stars' dismal performance in the qualifiers, with no wins in six matches and a meager three goals scored, has raised eyebrows.
In a statement signed by President of the Association, Kwabena Yeboah and released on Nov 19, SWAG attributed this decline to systemic problems rather than player talent or resources.
Ghana's fall from grace is stark, having gone from consistent AFCON semifinalists to failing to qualify for an expanded 24-team tournament.
SWAG urges stakeholders to convene for an honest discussion, emphasizing accountability and tangible action.
Citing Ghana's past resilience, SWAG believes the nation can rebound, but only through frank dialogue and bold decisions.
"This failure is not just about missing out on the 2025 tournament; it highlights the broader decline of the Black Stars, who were once regular contenders in the AFCON semifinals and finals.''
"The situation calls for accountability. It is not enough for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to merely take collective responsibility; we need to see action," SWAG added.
"If drastic changes are necessary, including leadership changes at the GFA, then Ghanaians, who are tired of repeated disappointments, will support such moves,'' parts of the statement read.
