Sports Ministry, GBA Launch Joint Probe into Nigerian Boxer's Death

Accra, Ghana - 01 April, 2025 - Ghana's sports community is mourning the loss of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who passed away after a light-heavyweight match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams has expressed his deepest condolences to Gabriel's family, friends, and the boxing community, describing him as a talented and passionate athlete who showed immense courage in the ring.
According to him, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in collaboration with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gabriel's death, ensuring full cooperation and transparency throughout the process.
“We deeply empathise with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the entire Nigerian boxing fraternity, and the global boxing community over this irreplaceable loss,” Adams wrote in a statement.
“Gabriel, a promising athlete who displayed exceptional talent, passion, and courage in the ring, passed away under unfortunate circumstances,” Adams noted, describing his passing as an irreplaceable loss to the boxing world.
