Senior Staff Association Warns of GRIDCo's Mounting Financial Challenges

Tamale, Northern Region -04 May, 2025 - Ghana's energy sector is facing a critical juncture as the Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Ghana Grid Company Limited raises alarms over mounting financial, operational, and governance challenges threatening the company's stability.

The association's concerns come amid growing competition from embedded power generation, which allows individuals and businesses to produce their own electricity, bypassing the national grid and significantly reducing GRIDCo's revenue.

According to the association, GRIDCo is grappling with rising debts, forex losses, and aging infrastructure, further exacerbating the company's financial woes. To mitigate these challenges, the association is calling for stronger partnerships between staff and management, as well as reforms to address key issues such as tax waivers on imported transmission equipment, debt recovery from major clients like the Electricity Company of Ghana, and grid modernization.

The association's chairman, Wisdom Kojo Adenyo, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to respond to the impact of embedded generation and other systemic challenges undermining GRIDCo's financial health.

“The SSA’s role as a stakeholder in enhancing productivity and building a sustainable energy future has never been more crucial.''

“We must work collaboratively to respond to the impact of embedded generation and other systemic challenges undermining GRIDCo’s financial health'', Mr Adenyo stated durig the 7th Biennial Delegates Congress of the SSA in Tamale.

Additionally, the association raised concerns over internal governance and human resource practices, citing the recruitment of external personnel into senior roles, which they say bypasses more qualified internal candidates and undermines staff morale.

The Senior Staff Association is urging GRIDCo's leadership to prioritize transparency, fairness, and shared commitment to sustainability and staff welfare, warning that failure to address these challenges could pose a significant threat to the company's performance and the overall energy sector
