Sam George Vows to Secure DSTV Fee Reduction and PayPal Access
Accra, Ghana - 4 July, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George has announced plans to meet with MultiChoice Africa, the parent company of DSTV, to discuss reducing subscription fees following growing public complaints over high charges and poor service.
The Minister, at a press briefing in Accra on July 3, revealed that he has scheduled an emergency meeting with MultiChoice Africa for Friday July 4, despite it being a public holiday, to address concerns around pricing and service delivery in Ghana.
He noted that the meeting with MultiChoice Africa would focus on agreeing on a way forward to address public concerns about affordability, fairness, and value for money.
“I’ve invited senior officials from MultiChoice Ghana for formal discussions on DSTV’s pricing. We’re responding to public concerns about affordability, fairness, and value for money,” he said. “Though tomorrow is a public holiday, I’ll be meeting both the local and South African teams to agree on a way forward.”
“I promise you this, I won’t leave that meeting without securing a reduction in DSTV subscription costs,” he stated firmly.
He also revealed that, in recent months, the government has restarted negotiations with PayPal to allow Ghanaians full access to the global payment platform. He expressed optimism that good news on PayPal integration would be shared at his next quarterly briefing.
“As of June 2025, PayPal’s regional team has shared a compliance roadmap with Ghana outlining what’s needed to reinstate the country to its whitelist,” Mr George explained. “We’re working with the Bank of Ghana and other stakeholders to meet those requirements, and I expect to share good news on PayPal integration at my next quarterly briefing.”
The Minister has also engaged with TikTok's West Africa team to improve content moderation and protect young users on the platform.
In addition to addressing concerns around pay-TV services and online payment platforms, Mr. George also discussed online safety with TikTok's West Africa team.
He disclosed that the government plans to work with TikTok to remove explicit content from the platform and block accounts that violate national values. The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation revealed that cybersecurity authorities have been tasked with identifying and removing such content in partnership with TikTok's operators.
“We discussed how to prevent the spread of inappropriate content, especially explicit material that goes against our cultural norms,” he said. “Cybersecurity authorities have been tasked with identifying and removing such content in partnership with the platform’s operators.”
