Live Sex and Explicit Material on TikTok is Unacceptable and Against Our Culture - Sam George

Accra, Ghana - 4 July, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George has expressed deep concern over the proliferation of sexually explicit content on TikTok, describing it as "completely unacceptable" and inconsistent with the country's cultural values.

According to him, the Ghanaian government has formally engaged TikTok's West African government relations team to address growing concerns over user safety and content regulation on the platform.

At a press briefing in Accra, Mr. George stated that the government has requested TikTok to establish in-country content moderation systems, with locally trained staff tasked with overseeing content to ensure alignment with Ghana's cultural and legal standards.

“I’m deeply concerned about some of the content on TikTok. Live sex and explicit material on TikTok is completely unacceptable and against our culture and our norms. These were part of the conversations I held with TikTok’s team to ensure content moderation in-country,” he pointed out.

He also proposed the development of a local content governance framework tailored to meet national regulatory expectations, emphasizing that protecting minors and vulnerable users online remains a top priority.

The Minister further disclosed that the Cybersecurity Authority has been directed to collaborate with TikTok in monitoring content, identifying offensive accounts, and ensuring such accounts are permanently removed.

While expressing concern over explicit content, Mr. George commended TikTok's recent rollout of a STEM-focused content feed and encouraged further collaboration with Ghana's "One Million Coders" programme to enhance digital literacy among the youth.

Additionally, Mr. George urged TikTok to fairly compensate Ghanaian content creators, emphasizing that their contributions significantly drive global engagement on the platform.

He noted that the government is set to continue its engagement with TikTok to ensure that the platform adheres to Ghana's cultural and legal standards, providing a safer online environment for all users.
