Sam George Blames User Behaviour for High Data Consumption
Accra, Ghana – 1 August, 2025 – The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has shed light on the recent complaints about high data usage in Ghana. According to the minister, investigations have revealed that user behavior and device settings are largely responsible for the high data consumption, rather than price manipulation by telecom companies.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, Sam George explained that an operational task force was established at the National Communications Authority (NCA), in collaboration with mobile network operators (MNOs), to investigate public concerns raised on social media. The task force thoroughly investigated every complaint referred to it and found no evidence of data price tampering.
The minister assured consumers that the ministry is committed to protecting their interests and would take decisive action against any telco found to be altering approved pricing. However, he emphasized that regulatory action would only follow evidence-based findings.
“I will not hesitate to deal decisively with any telco that alters the pricing that has been approved by the NCA. But unless there is evidence of the same, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by evidence,” he said.
Sam George reiterated the government's commitment to transparency and consumer protection in the telecom sector. He assured the public that every complaint would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
The minister's statement provides clarity on the issue of high data consumption in Ghana. It highlights the importance of user awareness and responsible data usage practices. The government's commitment to transparency and consumer protection in the telecom sector is also reassuring for consumers.
