Reforms Needed to Rescue Ghana's Ailing Poultry Sector - Eric Opoku

Accra, Ghana - 20 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's poultry sector is facing a crisis, with significant challenges hindering its growth, according to Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture.
Speaking during his vetting on Monday, Opoku emphasized the urgent need for reforms to address the sector's difficulties, including a substantial gap between demand and supply.
The poultry industry's struggles have serious implications for Ghana's food security and economic growth. To revitalize the sector, Opoku outlined a comprehensive plan, which includes the "Poultry Farm to the Table Programme". This initiative aims to support poultry farmers' associations with financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production.
According to him, a primary goal of the program is to bridge the gap between the supply of poultry products and increasing consumer demand. Opoku also highlighted the high cost of poultry feed as a critical challenge and committed to prioritizing the production of affordable feed to alleviate the burden on farmers.
“To revamp the poultry sector, we have outlined a program in our manifesto called the ‘Poultry Farm to the Table Programme.’ Under this initiative, we aim to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations, providing them with the necessary financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production,” Opoku stated.
