President Mahama to Launch 'Mahama Cares' Medical Trust Fund on April 29

Accra, Ghana - 28 April, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama is set to launch the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as "Mahama Cares," on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) at 10 am.
This initiative aims to provide financial support to individuals suffering from chronic diseases such as kidney and liver disease, high blood pressure, and cardiac conditions.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is part of President Mahama's broader healthcare plan, which includes improving hospitals, prioritizing healthcare, and uncapping the National Health Insurance Levy to ensure the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) can access full funding for treatments.
According to President Mahama, this fund will help alleviate the cost of treatment for individuals with chronic diseases.
A taskforce, inaugurated by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has been working on developing the framework for the fund. The nine-member taskforce includes healthcare experts, financial specialists, and legal professionals, who will oversee the successful implementation of the initiative.
President Mahama's healthcare plan also includes implementing Free Primary Healthcare from the CHPS compound to the polyclinic level and expanding health infrastructure to restore prompt employment and timely deployment of health workers.
Additionally, his administration plans to introduce a vehicle tax waiver scheme for health professionals and provide scholarship opportunities for nurses and Allied Health Workers to pursue PhD-level education.
