Pregnant Woman Dies in Zabzugu Violence Over Mahama's DCE Nominee

Zabzugu, Northern Region, Ghana - 05 April, 2025 - A pregnant woman lost her life, and two others were seriously injured in violent protests in Zabzugu, a town in Ghana's Northern Region.
The unrest was sparked by opposition to President's nomination of local government officials.
According to eyewitnesses, the protests began when youth in Zabzugu expressed their disapproval of Daniel Lakob Tanei's nomination as Municipal Chief Executive. The demonstrators blocked roads, threatened to destroy government property, and harassed passersby.
Security forces quickly intervened, but the situation escalated when the protesters regrouped on the outskirts of the town. The youth opened fire, sparking chaos and panic in the area.
In one tragic incident, a motorbike rider and two women were stopped by the protesters. When the rider refused to comply, the youth opened fire, killing the pregnant woman and injuring both the rider and the other woman.
The deceased woman's body has been transported to the Yendi Hospital morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Zabzugu Hospital.
Tensions remain high in the area, with security forces on high alert to prevent further violence or possible reprisals. The incident has sparked concerns about the impact of violent protests on local communities.
The government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, authorities are expected to take measures to calm the situation and prevent further unrest.
