Police Foil GH¢1.3m Gold Robbery Heist, 3 Suspects in Custody
Accra, Ghana - 2 July, 2025 - The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted a planned armed robbery targeting a gold consignment worth over GH¢1.3 million.
In an intelligence-led operation, police apprehended three suspects along the Accra-Akuapem-Mamfe road as they attempted to execute the heist.
According to the police, the operation was initiated by the Special Support Unit (SSU) at the National Headquarters and was triggered by intelligence suggesting an inside job, where a gold dealer's driver and a fake bodyguard planned to steal the gold during a scheduled delivery, prompting the Special Support Unit to take action.
The police revealed that the suspects, identified as Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey, had procured firearms, motorbikes, and a getaway vehicle in preparation for the robbery. They were also responsible for disposing of the stolen gold.
Kenneth Khartey was first arrested near Akuapem-Mamfe while trailing a Land Cruiser transporting the gold on a motorbike. Later, Adams Zibo and Massawud Yussif were picked up at East Legon in an unregistered blue Hyundai vehicle.
The police confirmed that the gold consignment, estimated to weigh 1.2 kilograms and valued at GH¢1,350,343.53, was safely recovered, and the gold dealer was rescued unscathed. The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with further investigations and will be arraigned before court in due course.
“Our intelligence gathering indicated there was a coordinated attempt to divert and steal a significant gold consignment, and swift action was necessary,” the police said in a statement.
