Parliament Summons Health Minister Over Cholera and Meningitis Outbreaks

Accra, Ghana - 12 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Parliament has summoned the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to appear before the House within a week to address the growing concern over the outbreaks of cholera and cerebrospinal meningitis.
The summons comes after the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, raised alarm over the rising number of cases and deaths, particularly in his constituency of Effutu.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin told Parliament that the Effutu municipality had recorded over 400 cholera cases, resulting in three deaths, while the Upper West Region had reported 14 deaths from cerebrospinal meningitis. He urged the government to take immediate action to contain the outbreaks, including deploying additional staff to support overstretched health facilities in Winneba.
The First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, directed the Minister to appear before Parliament to provide a comprehensive briefing on the outbreaks and the government's response.
The Minister's appearance is expected to address concerns over the government's handling of the crisis and provide assurances on the measures being taken to prevent further spread of the diseases.
