Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project: Mahama Demands Completion by June 2026

Accra ,Ghana – September 3,2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for contractors working on the beleaguered Ofankor-Nsawam Road project to adhere to their schedule and complete the project by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

During a working visit to the construction site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, accompanied by the Minister of Roads, Governs Agbodza, President Mahama expressed optimism about the progress made so far but stressed the importance of maintaining momentum and minimizing disruptions to motorists.

The President's remarks come amid growing public concern over the state of major highways and traffic congestion, especially along key commuter routes like Ofankor-Nsawam. The project, which began in July 2022 under the previous Akufo-Addo government, had an initial completion target set for July 2024. However, due to funding challenges, the completion date has been postponed several times, sparking protests from drivers and residents over heavy traffic congestion and environmental pollution.

The Ofankor-Nsawam Road project is currently 74% complete, with the contractor facing significant financial challenges due to unpaid compensation, preventing further progress. Court cases involving affected individuals have also stalled the project's completion.

The Chief Resident Engineer, Kwabena Bempong, disclosed that out of 328 structures along the project’s right of way, only 76 owners qualified for compensation, of which 40 have received payments.

President Mahama tasked the contractors to deliver durable work and keep to the revised completion timeline. He emphasized the need for proper site management to ensure smooth traffic flow during construction. "I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from now till you finish the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as you are working so that you don’t impede the flow of traffic," he said.

The President assured contractors of steady funding, having moved the project under the government's Big Push Programme, which has earmarked significant funds for major infrastructure works.

The Ofankor-Nsawam Road serves as a vital link for trade between Ghana and its neighboring landlocked countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The project's completion is expected to ease congestion and meet the expectations of thousands of commuters who depend on the road.
