Obuobia Darko-Opoku Gets New Role as Head of Ghana Medical Trust Fund
Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Acting Deputy MD of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), has now been appointed as Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) Secretariat

Accra, Ghana – 31 July, 2025 – In a significant personnel move, President John Mahama has reassigned Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), to a new role as Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) Secretariat. This development was announced in a letter from the Office of the President, citing relevant constitutional and statutory provisions.

Ms. Darko-Opoku, who took up her position at GACL in March 2025, will now oversee the implementation of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a key initiative aimed at providing financial support to patients battling chronic diseases. Her appointment is subject to the advice of the Fund's Governing Board, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, was launched on April 29, 2025, to provide financial support to patients with chronic diseases such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart conditions. President Mahama pledged six months of his salary, amounting to GH¢5,608,800, as seed capital for the fund. The initiative aims to bridge the gap in Ghana's healthcare system, where advanced treatment for chronic conditions is often inaccessible to many due to high costs.
