NUGS Calls Off Protest as WAEC Promises to Release WASSCE Results

Accra, Ghana - 25 Feb, 2025 - A planned protest by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been suspended.

The decision follows a meeting between NUGS officials, WAEC representatives, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General. WAEC in a statement has pledged to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results by March 1.

“Following an emergency meeting with West African Examinations Council (WAEC) officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, NUGS – National Union of Ghana Students has suspended the planned demonstration scheduled for 25th February 2025.

“WAEC has given firm assurances that all pending withheld results will be released by the 1st of March 2025,” portions of the statement read.

Thousands of students had been affected by the withheld results, sparking widespread frustration and concerns about university admissions and scholarship applications.

The controversy centres on WAEC's decision to cancel and withhold results due to alleged examination malpractice. NUGS had demanded transparency and the immediate release of the results.

The suspension of the protest provides temporary relief, but many students and parents remain anxious about the outcome.
