Democracy Hub Protests: Release the protesters immediately - GJA President
Accra, Ghana - The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has appealed to the government, judiciary, and police to release the 54 protesters remanded in connection with the recent Democracy Hub demonstrations.
Speaking at the 28th GJA Media Awards in Accra on September 28,2024, Dwumfour commended the police for their professionalism during the protests but criticized the excessive actions that led to the arrests.
Dwumfour described the two-week remand decision as "too extreme," emphasizing its negative implications for human rights protection in Ghana.
He urged authorities to adopt a more balanced approach, upholding the law while respecting citizens' rights.
“I want to commend the Ghana Police Service for exhibiting a high level of professionalism and restraint during the recent three-day protest against Galamsey by some individuals. We note some excesses and provocations that occurred during the demonstration, and the GJA condemns these excesses,'' he stated.
“However, we also believe that remanding the protesters for two weeks is too extreme and does not send positive signals when it comes to protecting human rights. As a result, we add our voice to calls on the government, police, and the judiciary to take steps to release the protesters immediately,” he added
The protests, which began peacefully, turned violent between September 21-23, resulting in blocked roads, damaged property, and clashes with police.
The 54 protesters, including nine in prison custody, were arrested for various offenses, including obstruction, rioting, and property damage.
