NHIA Hails Mahama's 'Bold Step' in Uncapping National Health Insurance Fund

Accra, Ghana - 11 March, 2025 - A significant decision by the Ghanaian government to remove the cap on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is set to transform the country's healthcare landscape.
The move, announced by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the budget presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, will inject GH¢9.93 billion into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), enhancing healthcare services and expanding coverage.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in a statement has welcomed the decision, hailing it as a major milestone in the government's efforts to provide sustainable and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.
According to NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the removal of the NHIF cap demonstrates the administration's commitment to healthcare reform and fulfills a key campaign promise.
The additional funding will support various healthcare initiatives, including claim payments, essential medicines, vaccines, and the Free Primary Healthcare program.
