Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, September 18, rejected allegations that Israel was behind the assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In a video address recorded in Jerusalem, Netanyahu compared the accusations to propaganda tactics used by Nazi Germany’s Joseph Goebbels. “Somebody has fabricated a monstrous big lie that Israel had something to do with Charlie Kirk's horrific murder. This is insane. It is false. It is outrageous,” he said.

Kirk, 31, was shot dead at a public event in Utah earlier this week, sparking widespread outrage in the United States. The activist, a prominent supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was well known for mobilising young conservatives and for his staunch support of Israel.

Netanyahu praised Kirk as “a century talent who defended freedom,” revealing that the late activist had written him a personal letter months ago. “One of my greatest joys as a Christian, he said, is advocating for Israel and forming alliances with Jews to protect Judeo-Christian civilisation.

He encouraged me to make the case directly to the American people about how vital Israel is to U.S. national security. He told me, ‘The Holy Land is so important to my life it pains me to see support for Israel slip away,’” Netanyahu recounted.
