National Labour Commission Orders PSWU to Call Off NIA Strike

Accra, Ghana - 28 June, 2025 - The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to call off its ongoing strike at the National Identification Authority (NIA), deeming the industrial action unlawful.

The directive follows a hearing held on Thursday, where representatives from the striking union and government institutions met to address concerns over the strike.

According to the NLC, the strike was procedurally flawed, as local or divisional unions lack the legal mandate to declare industrial action. The PSWU's Divisional Union had declared the strike without proper authorization, prompting the NLC to intervene.

The Commission, in a statement noted that, they have met with officials from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and the NIA to resolve the dispute. Although the union claimed to have initiated steps to end the strike, the NLC deemed these measures insufficient and ordered the strike to be halted immediately.

According to the statement, a follow-up meeting has been scheduled for July 1, 2025, to monitor compliance with the NLC's directives and the progress of negotiations. The outcome of this meeting will likely determine the next steps for the parties involved.
