National Health Insurance Registration for Children Aged 6-14 to Commence Soon - NHIA

Accra, Ghana - 04 April, 2025 - Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is set to expand its coverage to thousands of children after a crucial meeting between the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA).
The joint steering committee meeting, held on March 28, 2025, aimed to address outstanding challenges and streamline efforts to ensure a smooth registration process for children aged 6 to 14.
A major breakthrough was announced, with the NIA revealing that it had acquired approximately 400,000 cards to clear the backlog of unprinted identification cards.
This move is expected to significantly accelerate the registration process, which has been hindered by the unavailability of National Identification Cards (Ghana Cards). The NHIA emphasized the importance of addressing technical and operational challenges to ensure the efficient enrollment and issuance of NHIS cards to eligible children.
The printing of the backlog of Ghana Cards is set to commence on April 22, 2025, paving the way for a seamless registration process. The initiative aims to ensure that all cardholders are fully active members of the NHIS by the end of the production process.
The collaboration between the NHIA and NIA is part of a larger effort to register all Ghanaian children and provide them with access to essential healthcare services ². The program has already begun, with the goal of registering at least three million children during the first phase.
