NAGRAT Issues Ultimatum to GES to Implement Tough Measures Against School Violence
A chaotic scene captures the moment violence erupts during a peace ceremony between students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Injured students are seen being assisted, with a sense of urgency and panic in the air, as what was meant to be a peaceful event turns violent.

Accra, Ghana - 22 May, 2025 - In a bid to restore order in Ghana's schools, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has given the Ghana Education Service (GES) a deadline of May 31, 2025, to implement stringent disciplinary measures to curb the growing menace of violence and indiscipline in schools.

Failure to comply will prompt the association to take drastic action to safeguard the interests of teachers.

Citing alarming incidents of student aggression towards teachers, including attacks with machetes and guns, NAGRAT attributes the surge in violence to lax disciplinary policies and political interference.

The association highlights cases of teachers being assaulted for enforcing school rules, such as dress code and exam regulations.

To restore order, NAGRAT is calling on the GES to empower school authorities to take decisive action, including automatic dismissal of students who attack teachers or possess weapons.

The union, in a statement, also wants school heads to have the autonomy to repeat underperforming students without needing approval from higher authorities.
