NACOC, NIB Destroys $350m Worth of Cocaine in Major Blow to Drug Traffickers

Accra, Ghana - 20 June, 2025 - Ghana's war on drugs has taken a significant step forward with the destruction of 3.3 tonnes of cocaine worth approximately $350 million. The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), in collaboration with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), carried out the destruction at the Bundase Military Base.

The cocaine was seized in March this year after being intercepted in a tipper truck traveling from Cape Coast to Accra. A court order was obtained to destroy the illicit substance after a series of confirmatory tests were conducted in the presence of key stakeholders, including the trial judge and state attorneys.

The destruction marks a major victory for Ghana's anti-narcotics agencies, which have been working tirelessly to disrupt the country's illicit drug trade. Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director General of NACOC, emphasized the Commission's commitment to tackling drug trafficking and abuse.

“We did this today in your presence to show our commitment to end the menace. I will urge those involved to desist. We will not stand by and watch them bring in illicit drugs to destroy our future leaders,'' Brigadier General Mantey warned, urging those involved in the trade to desist.

He revealed that a nationwide crackdown on drug dealers is slated to commence next month.

The NACOC boss called on the public to assist in the fight against drug trafficking, saying "we need your help to bring them to the public view and name and shame them."
