MTN to Establish Second AI Lab in Ghana - Sam George

Accra, Ghana - 16 April, 2025 - Ghana is set to become a major hub for artificial intelligence research and innovation in Africa, following an announcement by Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George.

According to him, telecommunications giant MTN is establishing its second AI lab on the continent in Ghana, with the first lab currently located in South Africa.

This development underscores Ghana's growing role in driving technological advancements in Africa. Nartey described the new lab,as a "center of excellence," which will focus on propelling AI technology, machine learning, and digital transformation forward in an interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday April 14.

“MTN is building it’s second AI lab in the whole of Africa. There’s only one that MTN has right now in the South Africa. They are bringing the second one into Ghana. It’s going to be a centre of excellence.”

The initiative aligns with Ghana's broader ambition to position itself as a leading hub for AI development in Africa. This move is part of a larger partnership between MTN and the Ghanaian government to support the country's digital transformation agenda.

In March, MTN Group and Ghana signed a landmark agreement to work together on the government's flagship "One Million Coders Program," aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with AI, coding, and digital skills.
