Minority Boycotts Vetting Process over Speaker Bagbin's Ruling on Committee Reconstitution
Accra, Ghana - 31 Jan, 2025 - A boycott by the Minority side of Ghana's Appointments Committee has brought the vetting process to a standstill.
The walkout was triggered by concerns over a recent ruling by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, which called for the reconstitution of the committee.
The controversy stems from the suspension of four MPs, including the Majority, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh for misconduct during a chaotic session on Thursday.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, insisted that the vetting process should be suspended pending consultations with the Speaker.
Despite assurances from the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, that the Speaker has rescheduled the meeting for Monday, the Minority Leader remained resolute in his decision to boycott the proceedings.
Vetting however, continued in the absence of the minority.
