Military Officer Killed in Gun Attack in Bawku

Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana - 17 March, 2025 - A military officer from the 11 Mechanised Battalion has been killed in a gun attack in Ghana's volatile Bawku region, where a long-standing conflict has displaced thousands and claimed dozens of lives.

The incident occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, in the Kpalore-Avengo area of Bawku township. According to eyewitnesses, the officer was not in uniform when he was attacked by unidentified gunmen.

This latest incident brings the death toll in the Bawku conflict to at least 75 since it reignited in October 2024. The conflict has pitted the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups against each other, with reports of armed clashes, burning of homes, and displacement of civilians.

The Ghanaian government has deployed military personnel to the region to maintain order, but the conflict has shown no signs of abating. Residents of Bawku have been forced to live in self-imposed isolation, confined to their respective areas of residence.

The Bawku conflict has its roots in a longstanding dispute over land and chieftaincy. The conflict has been exacerbated by the proliferation of small arms and the lack of economic opportunities in the region.
