'Marriage is between a man and a woman' - Mahama Reaffirms Anti-LGBTQ Stance

Accra, Ghana - 28 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his support for a bill that seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in the country.

The President's comments, made during a meeting with clergy in Accra, underscore his administration's commitment to traditional values.

The proposed legislation, known as the Proper Family Values Bill, has been a topic of heated debate in Ghana. While proponents argue that it is necessary to protect the country's cultural heritage, opponents claim that it violates human rights and perpetuates discrimination.

President Mahama disclosed that consultations are ongoing with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, which was passed by the eighth Parliament but did not receive presidential assent under the previous administration.

“I believe in the principles and values that only two genders exist—man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Mahama declared, receiving nods of approval from religious leaders in attendance.

“It is my hope that the consultation will lead to a renewed Proper Family Values Bill,” he sadded.
