Mahama's Government Lacks Strategy for Tackling Galamsey - A Rocha Ghana

Accra, Ghana - 11 April, 2025 - Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, has lambasted the Mahama-led administration for its handling of illegal mining, popularly known as 'galamsey', citing a surge in activities during the transition period after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's concession of defeat.
In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 10, Bosu attributed the escalation to weakened leadership and a lack of engagement from political elites and law enforcement, allowing illegal miners to exploit vulnerable areas.
He expressed disappointment with the current government's strategies, questioning their preparedness and effectiveness in addressing the issue.
“Everybody was on the previous administration that the government must do better than they were doing already. But all of a sudden it appears they are clueless.
“They don’t know what to do and if you listen to some of their strategy they are putting forward then you ask yourself, did they really have a strategy before they assumed office and I am sad to say that if you go to the ground they tell you that it has gotten worse and they don’t see any reprieve in the short term,” Bosu said.
Bosu's criticism echoes growing concerns about the government's ability to address environmental and economic challenges in Ghana.
The surge in galamsey has led to devastating environmental consequences, including polluted waterbodies and degraded forests, sparking concerns about the government's ability to address the crisis.
